Mysterious are His ways

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways” (Is. 55:8-9).

God is not only benevolent. He is also wise. He not only acts with love for mankind. He acts wisely as well. He combines His love for mankind with His wisdom. When both of these are accordance with each other, that is when He answers or does not answer our prayers. (The devil, the ruler of the world” (Jn. 16:11) operates in the exact opposite manner. He uses his evil and his hatred to a ack Mankind in an a empt to trap people and to lead them to disaster and to ruin).

The standards and criteria that God has are inscrutable and totally unknown to us. He may answer the prayers of a modest man and give no answer to someone held in high respect. His answers to our prayers are inconceivable. It is a mystery. A paradox!

A group of young men from the city of Patras visited Mt. Athos. Although swimming is not allowed on any of the beaches near Mt. Athos, they ignored the rules and went swimming. One of the young men, upon diving into the sea, was in immediate danger of drowning. About to be overwhelmed by the waves, he cried: “Christ, save me.”

A sudden invisible force pulled him out of the water and onto dry land. (Afterwards this young man devoted the rest of his life to God and became a monk at Mt. Athos) Someone else might have encountered a similarly dangerous situation, have called on Christ to help him, and perished with his prayer left unanswered.

Christian Orthodox Prayer, by Rev. Vassilios Bakoyiannis, p.128-129

You ascended in Glory, O Christ our God
and gladden Your disciples
by the promise of the Holy Spirit
Your blessing assured them that You are the
Son of God, the Redeemer of the world.

When the angelic powers were at your tomb,
then they that guarded You become as dead.
And Mary stood beside the grave seeking Your
immaculate body. You devastated Hades and were
not tried by it. You met the Virgin and granted life to us.
O Lord, Who are risen from the dead, glory to You.

3. APOLYTIKION of God-Bearing Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council (Plagal 4th Mode)

Most gloried art Thou, O Christ our God,
Who hast established our Fathers as luminous stars upon
the earth, and through them didst guide us all to the true
Faith. O Most Merciful One, glory be to Thee.

Today is the beginning of our salvation,
and the revelation of the mystery of ages.
The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin.
And Gabriel proclaims this gift from God.
Together with him we cry out to You,
O Theotokos: "Hail thou full of grace,
the Lord is with you."

5. KONTAKION OF THE ASCENSION (Tone Plagal of the Second)

When Thou hadst fulfilled Thy dispensation
for our sakes, uniting things on earth with the
Heavens, Thou didst ascend in glory,
O Christ our God, departing not hence,
but remaining in separable from us and
crying unto them that love Thee:
I am with you and no one can be a against you.
